What a show is actually for

A show is not applause. It is thirty minutes that produce assets and proof: press coverage with your name spelled correctly, buyer appointments that reference a look number, campaign imagery shot in the only room where the collection will ever look like that again, and the single line every young brand needs — shown in London.

Judge the spend against those outputs and the decision becomes clear. If the production cannot generate press, buyers and imagery, the money is better spent elsewhere this season. If it can, underfunding the parts that generate them — casting, photography, PR — to afford the slot is spending most of the money to waste all of it.

The feed is the primary medium

For a fashion brand launching now, the order of media is not negotiable: the identity will be seen on a phone first, on a website second, on a garment third, and on a billboard — if things go very well — last. So the sequence in which it is designed should match. A mark drawn at advert size and then scaled up will survive the billboard; the reverse almost never survives the feed.

Designing at ad size forces the useful disciplines early: a wordmark that stays legible at 24 pixels, a palette that reads through a compressed video thumbnail, type that holds its character when a platform re-encodes it, a system that still looks like the brand when the crop removes half of it.

Scale is a test, not a presentation

In our identity work every system is proofed at two sizes before it is shown to anyone: the 4:5 paid-social crop, because that is where the money lands, and six-metre runway backdrop scale, because that is where the photographs that define the brand get taken. If it holds at both, everything between is safe. That test is baked into how we hand identities over to Production — the campaign team should never discover the logo dissolves on camera.

The wrong response to all this is to design something inoffensive that survives every crop by saying nothing in any of them. Character first; then engineer the character to travel. Two accounts, two jobs

The fix in both cases starts with the same decision: the founder and the company are two different media properties with two different jobs. The company account sells; it holds the campaigns, the drops, the stockists, the proof. The founder’s account builds trust; it holds the opinions, the process, the rooms they walk into, the things a logo cannot say. Confusing the two jobs is what produces both failure modes above.

A working personal-brand strategy is mostly subtraction: what this person will not post, which conversations they will not join, which stages are not worth their time. What remains is a position a human can actually hold for years — stated in one page, not twelve slides, because a position nobody remembers on a Tuesday is not a position.

The fashion-specific part

Fashion buys people before it buys products. Editors commission stories about designers, not SKUs; buyers back founders they believe will still exist in three seasons; collaborations happen between names. Traffic multiplies the page, nothing more

Paid promotion is a multiplier on whatever it lands on. Land it on a page that converts at two percent and you buy growth; land it on a page that converts at nought point three and you buy the world’s most expensive bounce statistics. The arithmetic is brutal and it is why our Presence movement refuses to run Google, YouTube or Meta budgets onto a site we would not sign.

What “fixed” means is concrete, not aesthetic. The page loads in about a second on a mid-range phone. The first screen says what the brand is, who it is for and what to do next — without scrolling, without a cookie wall eating the viewport. The product photography matches the standard of the clothes. Checkout does not ask for an account before it asks for a size. None of this is glamorous; all of it decides whether the ad money compounds or evaporates.

Order of operations

So the sequence we run is fixed: identity and site first, measurement second, promotion third. Build the store around the brand rather than around a theme, wire the analytics so decisions have numbers, then — and only then — buy the traffic. Campaigns tuned on a working site get cheaper every month, because the platforms reward pages that people do not immediately leave.
